I've been taking a look at the cars I've picked for the race.   Like I said, I have now 5 of these cars, 4 of which have never been run.  Each team will get one of these cars (no charge).  I also have picked up 3 more chassis.  The teams will invest in whatever upgrade parts they would like to use.

But, back to this chassis.  It needs work.  So does the interior.  I will be taking pictures of a couple of issues along with my allowable mods to fix these potential problems.  I'll post them here.

Pics of the cars

This one should be the Militia's since  I have recently renewed my interest in Martinis.

Another good candidate for the Militia

This last one I hope no one picks.  The driver style is too modern, but if a team really wants to use this car, I'll learn to live with this driver.

Tomorrow, pictures of the interior and chassis mods.

Bob,

Are the cars limited to the 6 Fly Carrera 6s that you posted? It appears that Fly made several more such as the FLY 1/32 88201 PORSCHE CARRERA 6 SEBRING 1967 TIGER, Fly A1604 Porsche 906 (Carrera 6), Alcaniz 1968, Fly 88345 Porsche Carrera 6, LeMans, 1966 (C) etc.. Can we use any Fly Carrera 6? Thanks!

regards,

YES.  These are my cars (I have 5 of them) and I am donating these 3, one per team.  If you would rather use another one, that is fine.  The ones shown are virtually unused, and since they end up in the museum anyways, I thought I would just donate them.

Okay, here are the interior mods that will be legal.  First lets take a look at the innards:

Because of the height of the driver, they lowered the bucket seats, which can interfere with the chassis.  Here is a pic of the problem:

First, break the welds that hold the bucket seats in and remove the bucket seats:

Next just glue the seats in so they are flush with the interior that holds them:

You can grind things down to make it all smooth, but the seats are a little thin, as witnessed by my hole in the front of the driver seat.  The idea here is just make it flat as can be.

Now pull the driver apart and shave his ass.  Yes, take some meat of his rear end.  Glue his bottom half back in the seat.

Now shave some off his waist and set his top half on his bottom half and make sure his head doesn't hit the roof forcing the interior down.  Once you shave enough off his belly, just glue them together and your done.

Next the chassis itself.

The chassis on the Fly Carrera 6 is a little flimsy.  If you want to brace it, here is what I'll let you do.

You can grind down the 4 nipples that the interior fits between and also grind down the edge of the chassis shown below.  This will allow a flat surface from front to rear to glue a brace in if you want to.  If you want to put a brace between the chassis sides as well, that would be okay.  Also, you may remove the clips that hold the magnet it and grind that area flat if you would like.

What thickness of plastic did you use for bracing. Just want to keep everyone on the same page.  Grin

* I say we all give FB the interiors to modify. I can see a driver accidentally sanded down to his armpits....  Tongue Tongue

I didn't use any bracing.   That white area is a computerized simulated reproduction of real bracing.

I'll speak to the car mechanics about the mods, so there is no doubt as to what can be done.

Also, each team captain should be picking their Chief Mechanic.  Let me know who it is.

The interiors DO NOT have to be modified if they don't cause a problem, but one of the benefits is that you can put some thin lead between the modified interior and the chassis.

This year, rules are not going to be too picky.  You'll be able to build the car to its best performance right off the bat, and there will probably be no mandatory pit stop.  I'm still working on the rules.

Here are a few more pics for clarification.
The first one shows that another allowable mod is to shave off the mounting collar on the bottom of the chassis.

This one shows some brass bracing and thin lead weight on the inside of the chassis.  You still have room for guide wires and another piece of lead weight!
